June 8, 2009: Tarrytown, NY

We discovered this morning that we had chosen a bad place to moor... and we were actually stuck in the mud at low tide... so we spent about 45 minutes pulling the big boat free with the dinghy and finally got off around 9:30. We got to Tarrytown in about an hour. By the time we had docked and walked up the LONG hill to church, we were late. But the service was wonderful... there was a drama all about how our emotions and inner thoughts can undermine our efforts to be close to God... very thought provoking and then we had wonderful uplifting singing that made us feel close to God. We were blessed. The congregation was very friendly, and several people came up to hear our story.

At lunch we ate at the Striped Bass and found that they had fried shrimp on a child’s plate. So we ordered 8 of them for the four of us and had a great dinner... jumbo fried shrimp, fries and cole slaw... reminded us of home (but no hushpuppies).

We sent Laurie and Brian off in a cab at 4:30 to the airport,... but there flight was cancelled... so now they have rented a car and come back again. They now must leave at 5:30 am to get back to the airport. Another HOT day... but we got ice cream tonight at a little soda fountain in Tarrytown! And since we now had a car, we went to see the huge cemetery, the Old Dutch Burying Ground dating back into the late 1600s in Sleepy Hollow, where the legend started about the headless horseman chasing Ichabod Crane! :) This was an example of the earliest American fiction literature written by Washington Irvin first published in 1820.
