September 12, 2008: Michigan City to Chicago

Today is the day we make it to the big city. The weather is forecasting storms for the next several days, and we thought we should finish up Lake Michigan. We left the hug of land and cruised on a direct path across the end of the Lake in a drizzling gray mist. In the crossing we saw a few sailboats out in the big expanse and a huge freighter lying low in the blue gray water.

As we approached Chicago we spotted a beautiful four masted ship sailing in the same direction. It seemed like a step back in history to see it there in the murky distance. The city skyline, which is immense, was shrouded in fog as we came in but we spotted the familiar Old Navy Pier with its Ferris wheel and pavilions. We cruised in behind the lake front jetty and found our place at a city wall tie-up. This location has no facilities, but the $45 per night bill is significantly better than the $250 a night tie-up at the Yacht Club. Actually we are docked in a beautiful spot with a green lawn, trees and paved bicycle path at our doorstep (or swim platform as the case may be).

This is a first time to visit Chicago by water and quite an adventure. With the rain settling in, we decided to strike out and find dinner. Umbrella in hand and coats zipped, we walked up the bike path and crossed into the city with a destination of the intersection of Michigan and Lake where we found Giordano’s (134 E Lake Street). After a thirty minute wait, we got a table and ordered our first Chicago stuffed pizza. The pizza was the result of Efren and Joseph Boglio sharing Giordano, their mother’s recipe from their small home town in northern Italy. It was delicious.
