September 23, 2008: Ottawa

Today the kind Captain Moe loaned us his truck for a trip into town. Our outing included a list of chores and entertainment. We made a visit to the laundry and to the grocery store. We also rode out to Buffalo State Park to see the buffalo. This is a 300 acre park along the side of the Illinois River. As it turned out, several local high schools were having a cross country meet at the park, and the tumult of the kids had scared the buffalo. We found the huge animals hiding out in their small shelter.

The park also had some nature trails, one by the river, and the other by land that had been reclaimed from a huge quarry. This second trail included ground sculptures, called Effigy Tumuli, that are so large that you can only see them in their entirely from the air.

After the park, we rode by Anne’s Hideaway which we had heard was a good restaurant; since the parking lot was full, we decided to eat there and it turned out to be a pretty nice place. We also decided to see a movie at the one theather in town. We went to see Traveling Pants 2 and really enjoyed it along with the other 4 people who were there.
