September 22, 2008: Still in Ottawa

>

It was hard to drum up much excitement for our day in port today. However, the marina did offer us diesel fuel at $4.07 per gallon that they had brought in on a tanker truck. We decided that there were so many questions about what we would find downstream that we should fill up here. We moved the boat to double park across the end of several slips where the truck’s pumping hose could reach us and took on 160 gallons. The dock master showed us there he had marked the upright post on the floating docks to mark the spot 15 feet above us where the water hit its high mark during the flood.

Later on this afternoon, Tom and I took our bikes back over to the nature trail by the I&M canal for a 5 mile ride. We rode along the gravely drive enjoying the greenery and shade when to our surprise we suddenly flushed 5 big wild turkeys out into the path. At first we were quite close to them and they were beautiful big dark brown and tan dappled birds. They were tall but trim, not like the farmer raised poultry. These are the birds that Benjamin Franklin thought should be our national symbol. By the time I was able to stop and get my camera out, they were just blurs running down the trail in front of us. I am disappointed to not have a better picture, but it was a joy to see them. When we got back, the harbor master was not at all surprised and said that there were wild turkeys everywhere!

Tonight we had steaks for a change. Tom grilled them at the marina barbeque because they frowned on cooking on the back of your boat at close quarters. Steak tonight, but it might be turkey before too long. It looks like we will still be here tomorrow... We might have to make another trip to the grocery store.

It was also fun to see egrets again today!
