September 24, 2008: Ottawa

Each morning we have been getting up early to check on the status of travel on the Illinois River just in case it will be the day for us to move on. Today we found that the river had been opened to mile 180 (we are at 242), but not open far enough for us to get to a marina or safe harbor. So we have another day in Ottawa.

Today we took our bikes back into to town and down the trail by the river to the Ottawa YMCA. They were very cordial and let us in for their afternoon adult swim. The pool was great and Tom swam his half mile while I did some aquatic exercises. The other swimmers recognized us as new faces and were anxious to hear our story about the river and the loop plans we have. Apparently the new article was in the local paper yesterday.

We made it back to Heritage Harbor in time to be in the 4:00 group picture of the 25 or so stranded loopers who are docked here for the duration. We met Steve Moss, the captain of the Yama, who had sailed his Hallberg-Rassy 36 foot sailboat from England to the US. Corri, his crew, had flown to the US for her first trip to America to meet him on this side of the ocean (smart girl).
