May 2, 2009: West End, Bahamas

We made a trip to Powell Cay in our little boat to take one last walk along the ocean side where the prehistoric reef is exposed. It was very interesting to see this again after having heard the speaker from National Geographic who talked about a period of time when the sea level was much higher and these rock, petrified reefs, would have been formed by coral under the water. We found some small conchs, key hole limpets, sea biscuits and sea fans. No shark this time.

We saw a huge root structure from an upturned tree that made for a shelter from the beach. The branches and needles looked like a pine, but the root structure looked like a hardwood. The beach was beautiful.

Returning to the boat, we cast off for the long trip past the Sale Cay to West End. Most of the scenery on the way were boats that were also traveling this water highway. It seemed strange to be out of sight of land and still be on a freeway of passing boats. At one point, we seemed to be on a collision course with an oncoming boat, so I took the auto pilot off and steered to the right (to allow them to pass on the left) at the same time they turned to their left.

We passed small islands which were just solid rock rising out of the sea. There were storm clouds above as we traveled through brief periods of rain.

We reached West End around 4:30 and for fun listened to the Kentucky Derby on the satellite radio. Intriguing story for the winner to be an relatively inexpensive horse running against odds of 50 to 1, with a first year trainer and an owner who drove 1500 miles with a broken leg to be there. Truth is stranger than fiction, and reiterates that you only win when you try and believe that you can.
