May 6, 2009: Palm Beach, FL

Since we are back to internet and phones, I am back at work, and Tom has spent the last couple of days diligently scrubbing salt off the boat. Salt water is very harsh on all metals and the salt spray coats everything it touches including windows, fenders, ropes, fiberglass and fabrics. He has taken some long rides exploring Palm Beach and included me in a few.

On Wednesday we rode the 5 miles north to the end of the island and can speak to the fact that Florida, even after 5 pm, is hot in May. Along the way, on the edge of the Flagler property was an amazing majestic banyan tree. Some of its root structures were 5 feet tall, and I am guessing it is over 100 years old. We took pictures on the way out, and when we came back, there were girls having their picture made in front of the wonderful tree.

We passed the Bernie Madoff house on North Lake Way which is in Palm Beach and faces the ICW, but we did not know exactly which one it was. The bike trail winds along next to the water with tall hedges buffering the houses on the way from the trail. It is amazing how very tall they are, maybe 30 feet, and how well groomed. We passed the Duck House, a wooden frame house built in 1891 on the water, which is the oldest house in Palm Beach. It was a beautiful ride and great exercise. We rode far enough to reach the inlet where we crossed in from the ocean.

On the trip home, we saw a beautiful view of the West Palm Beach sky line across Lake Worth from the bike trail. It was framed by a twisted live oak leaning away from the prevailing winds.
